Video production consists of two separate segments:
- Filming raw video
- Video packaging (editing raw footage into a finished, polished video)
Each segment is billed separately, and packaging is always an optional service.
Length of Packaged Video
The longer the video, the more it costs — and most companies overestimate how much time they actually need to communicate their message.
Even a complex business can usually be summarized in two to three minutes; beyond that, you risk losing your audience. That said, commercial and industrial projects sometimes genuinely need four, five, or more minutes to show an entire process from start to finish.
How to Figure Packaged Video Production Costs
Pricing packaged video production is tricky, and the honest answer is usually: it depends. Many clients ask for a ballpark figure up front — this document should answer most of those questions, and I am always happy to talk through anything it doesn't cover.
I am also always glad to prepare a written estimate, but without solid project details, an estimate is rarely accurate. Price is always agreed to in advance so the client knows the full cost before production begins, based on the details available at the time of the estimate.
A detailed script or storyboard is critical to pricing accurately. In my experience, the less detail provided during pre-planning, the more likely the final cost is to exceed the original budget — sometimes by 50% to 100%.
When a project runs longer than expected and the price changes midway, it's almost always because the client added shots or other components during filming, resulting in a higher invoice than expected. This is entirely avoidable with solid pre-planning: a clear script or storyboard, and clear communication of project details before filming begins.
What Determines the Final Price
The final price for packaged video production depends on:
- Number of filming sessions
- Number of video clips created
- Total time spent filming
- Filming location and environment
- Turnaround time for raw video
- Days needed for editing
- Final video length
- Project deadline
It also depends heavily on exactly what you want to see on screen. A helicopter flyover looks impressive but costs far more than filming from across the street. A custom animated logo intro costs more than using an existing one or importing a stock file. Every creative choice like this has a cost implication.
Why "How Much Does a 3-Minute Video Cost?" Doesn't Have a Simple Answer
This is the question I hear most often — for a 3-minute video, a 2-minute video, a 60-second video, whatever the length. And the answer is always: it depends.
Here's why: two videos of the same final length can take wildly different amounts of time and money to produce. I have completed a 3-minute video in a single day for $3,000. I have also done a 3-minute video that took three days and cost $10,000, and one that took nearly two weeks and cost over $40,000.
The difference comes down to:
- How organized the script or storyboard is
- What needs to be shot, and how long it takes to shoot it
- Whether any stock footage needs to be purchased
- Whether professional voiceover talent is needed
- How much time post-production requires
The bottom line: the more project details communicated before filming begins, the more accurate the cost estimate will be. Consulting is always free.
